Knowledge to Transform Your Medical Practice

Case Study: Employees Working at Different Speeds

By Thomas Patton MD

Employees Working at Different Speeds

CR and AT both work in triage for a practice. CR has been with the practice for 5 years and makes $2.00 more per hour than AT who has been with the practice for just 6 months. Despite having less experience at triage, AT is able to triage patients approximately 50% faster than CR. This has been noticed by others in the office including the physicians and especially AT. Recently AT has made comments in front of the physicians about the speed of processing patients and now has asked for a raise to at least equal CR’s rate of pay.  What do you do?

Diagnosis:

Staff tension generated by work place efficiency

Improvement Opportunity/Management:

Do you raise AT’s salary?

Do you meet with CR and use this an opportunity to discuss work place efficiency?

Do you use this as an opportunity to evaluate triage processes and best practices?
