Knowledge to Transform Your Medical Practice

Case Study: PT Manages the Practice Without Building Relationships

By Thomas Patton MD

It's important for staff members to build relationships in the office in order to grow their careers and become great leaders.

PT, a new office administrator for a practice, has been in the position for nine months. The physicians are all pleased with how PT shares business and other information with the partners and conducts the monthly meetings. Some long-term members of the clinical staff, however, have complained to the partners saying they find PT cold and distant. They do not feel they have a relationship with PT, and in general, the staff members do not feel they have someone to turn to with their concerns. The physicians notice that PT tends to keep nontraditional hours and does not interact with the staff much.

Diagnosis:

  • Missing leadership qualities
  • Failure to listen actively and build relationships

Recommendations:

  • Have a private conversation with PT directly about the gaps in leadership, specifically team-building skills, active listening, and acting as a role model.
  • Consider a course on team building and/or leadership for PT to address the gaps in her leadership abilities
